Launch of Small Claims Procedure in Jinja

On March 10, 2014; the official launch of the Small Claims Procedure at took\r\nplace at Jinja High Court.

\r\n\r\n

The function was presided over by the Hon. Principal Judge, Hon. Justice\r\nDr. Yorokamu Bamwine. During the function, Hon. Justice Namundi told the\r\ngathering that Jinja has a backlog of about 800 cases that are pending hearing;\r\nhe cited lack of judicial officers as the cause of this.

\r\n\r\n

He further noted that this retarded provision of justice to the people of Busoga\r\nsub region and the neighboring districts of Mukono, Buikwe, Kayunga and Buvuma\r\nwhich follow under his area of Jurisdiction.

\r\n\r\n

In his remarks the Hon. Principal Judge noted that under the newly\r\nlaunched Judicial Service System "small claims procedure” individuals shall sue\r\ncompanies or fellow individuals who owe them debts below 10M/=. Under this\r\nsystem lawyers shall not be allowed to represent either an individual or a\r\ncompany and this is done to reduce on the number of case backlog in courts.

\r\n\r\n

Hon. Justice Dr. Bamwine however warned errant judicial officers who\r\nsolicit money from people in exchange of justice.
